Botox: Botulinum toxin softens wrinkles and expression lines

Treatment is used to rejuvenate, especially eye area and forehead

What is Botox?

Botulinum toxin commonly known as Botox is a toxin produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. It is the same bacteria causing the disease botulism, but the industrialized botulinum toxin is purified and used at doses that do not cause the disease.

As promotes firming effect on the skin, the cosmetic use of botulinum toxin occurs in general, especially for smoothing wrinkles and fine lines in the face region.

The health authorities determine the possibilities of using this substance for different situations in each country. Approved by ANVISA (National Health Surveillance Agency) in 1992, Botox has become the first botulinum toxin registered in Brazil and since then has been a progressive number of aesthetic and therapeutic indications, such as the use of treatment for hyperhidrosis.

Other names
There are several trade names, Botox is the best known name of botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin has subtypes A, B, C, the medicine is used in the type A.

Industrialized botulinum toxins have small differences and receive subnames as OnabotulinumtoxinA (Botox®), AbobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport®), RimabotulinumtoxinB (Myobloc® - is not available in Brazil), IncobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin®). Botulinum Toxin different companies have their own characteristics, different strengths and effectiveness.

Indications botox

Botox for cosmetic use is indicated to soften wrinkles and facial expression lines. Among the lines are treated the forehead wrinkles, the glabella (the space between the eyebrows) and crow's feet, wrinkles that form around the eyes. For grooves around the lips, including the famous Chinese mustache - line that forms between the nose and corner of the mouth - the most recommended is the facial filler, it is a region of a lot of movement and brings better results.

The main motivation for this cosmetic treatment is the nuisance generated by wrinkles to the patient. Compared with creams for wrinkles and frown lines, Botox usually bring more visible results. However, botox indication depends on individual medical evaluation.

botox action

Wrinkles are caused by several factors: inadequate sun exposure, poor diet and smoking are some of them. But the crucial factor for its appearance is the natural contraction of facial muscles, are called lines. For example, many people have the habit of frowning to express themselves, but over time this contraction of the muscles of the region generates horizontal creases in the skin. The same with the wrinkles around the eyes - a result of the tension generated when we smile or force them to view, for example.

When injected in these wrinkles, botulinum toxin acts as a neuromuscular blocker, or blocking the transmission of stimuli from neurons to muscle, preventing, partially or totally, to muscle contraction. "This blockade despite being irreversible is temporary because the body comes to building new transmission routes after some time," explains dermatologist John Paul Junqueira Magalhães Afonso, the Edmundo Vasconcelos Hospital Complex.

In the case of expression lines, the benefit is given in two ways:

1 - In preventively: as muscle contraction is stopped there will be the formation of wrinkles by muscle movement in the area where the botox was applied.

2 - In reparative way: how Botox takes away the tension of the muscles, the wrinkles caused by these muscles are softened.

Prerequisites for the application of botox
It is recommended that Botox be made from the 25-year-old, however few women in this age group are bothered by wrinkles.

As the application of Botox is made

The toxin is injected - applied to the nerve ending of the treatment region - and often use topical anesthetic prior to application, the maximum that you feel are small needle finely chopped. The procedure leaves no scar. As the effects fully pass after a few months, are necessary new applications to be maintained the result. No special care is needed before or after the procedure.

Professionals who can apply botox

Dermatologists and plastic surgeons are the most qualified professionals to apply the cosmetic treatment with botox. "Check the training and certification of your physician before undergoing the procedure," advises dermatologist John Paul.

Contraindications

Botox, as well as any drug is contraindicated for patients with allergy to any component of the formulation. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with neuromuscular diseases, immune and coagulopathy (or persons using anticoagulants, aminoglycosides and drugs that interfere with neuromuscular transmission) should not be treated with the substance.
